Better <h: selectManyCheckbox> layout?

I have a JSF page. At some point, I have <h:selectManyCheckbox>one that displays several elements. The tag provides two attributes that you can set to determine whether content should be displayed horizontally or vertically. However, with more than a few points, both options look bad. Go horizontally and it all ends. Go vertically and you can make your page too long. Is there a way to get the best of both worlds? Indicate what should be the number of columns x, for example? Say I have 20 items and I would like 4 columns. If this number increased to 100, I would like only 4 columns. Then the list will grow vertically.

Is it possible?
