GPL and hosted services

As I understand it, the GPL says that you need to distribute the derived code for the works you distribute, i.e. if you are developing internal software, you can save your code privately.

What happens if you develop a server application like Facebook or StackOverflow? The server application is not "distributed", so what is the situation with your code in this case?

Explanation Imagine that I create my own CVS-based VCS, and I sell access as a service, but do not allow other people to start their own servers ... for example, the Codesion business model. I make money on something significant, based on the GPL code, but I never release the server itself - does this mean that I do not have to release the source in the GPL?

By the way, a discussion of morality as well as the legal side is welcome.
