What happened before web services and SOA?

I’m interested in the history of distributed, collaborative, inter-organizational programming paradigms - web services and SOA are de facto now, but what happened before? What models were implemented by SOA?

thank

Well, I suppose RPC is really what SOAP is, only they did not copy the data payload over the standard protocol (http in the case of SOAP). Thus, CORBA and DCE-RPC and ONC RPC did the same, but only on internal networks, and not over the Internet.

SOA began as a concept at some point in the nineties. Overlap with the development of CORBA. It is much more difficult to determine the actual date or event, and there are more than a few claims to conceptualize this.
