Local Web Applications and W3C Standards

Question

If I write a local application that will only work using a specific browser, can I customize myself by slightly ignoring the W3C standards? I ask this question because in this application I am thinking about using custom HTML tags, custom attributes, etc.

I believe that you should follow the standards. The reason is that technology is evolving, but standards usually remain for a while.
