Android java.lang.VerifyError for private method with annotated argument

Question

I have a very simple project that compiles, but cannot be run on an emulator. The problem is the following method:

private void bar(@Some String a) {} // java.lang.VerifyError

The problem can be resolved if the annotation is deleted.

private void bar(String a) {} // OK

or changed the visibility of the method:

void bar(@Some String a) {} // OK
public void bar(@Some String a) {} // OK
protected void bar(@Some String a) {} // OK

Any idea what is wrong with the original method? Is this a dalwick mistake, or?

Android.class= > .dex translation invokespecial JVM- invoke-direct Dalvik, . bar() , invoke-direct NoSuchMethodError.
