How can I get the edit or ECI AMI downloaded to my laptop?

I like to develop locally on my laptop, but you want to deploy it to EC2 / Rightscale. What is the best way to upload the edit or ec2 AMI to my local desktop so that I have a mirror copy of the cloud operating environment that I can work against?

I did not try to convert AMI AMI to a local VM image, but you could work the other way around: create a local virtual machine to do your development, and then convert the VM image to AMI AM2. Here's a nice post that explains the process.

You can try using a stroller. It uses Virtualbox to provide virtual machines, and you can use chef-solo to run chef recipes on the virtual machine.
