How to receive and display forum posts?

Question

I am struggling with a conceptual issue. When you have a forum with thousands of posts and / or threads, how do you extract all the posts that will be displayed on your site? Do you connect to your database every time someone visits your page and then commits each entry in the array and displays it? Surely it looks like it will be very taxed on your server and will cause a whole bunch of unnecessary readings of the database. Can anyone cover this topic?
