Survey against socket servers for online flash games

I want to make a flash game online, it will have social functions, but the gameplay will be mostly single-player. For example, two players will not immediately appear on the screen, social interaction will be via asynchronous messages, in real time chat and there will be nothing at all. Most of the logic will occur in the client, the server will check the logic of the client, but this does not have to be completely synchronous, so I think that the survey can be satisfactory.

In many places, I read that socket servers can be more efficient than using polling for online games, but mostly games that are more multi-user with more multi-user interactions than the game I described? If many users simultaneously play online, but each of them plays a relatively isolated game and does not interact in real time with each player, there may be a survey in order or use sockets, regardless if you have an online game in which you imagine many people at the same time?
