Are tips on tuning the usus invalide database performance for a third-party application like Drupal

When you have a slow database application, the first suggestions people make are:

  • Track slow requests
  • Add relevant indexes

In the case when you create your own application, this is very logical, but when you use CMS, for example Drupal, which people have developed and customized, is this approach really valid?

I mean, are Drupal tables already tuned for performance? Even if I try to understand which queries are slow, what can I do? Overwrite Drupal core?!?
