Make an IIS7.5 Website

What I do MUST be simple. In IIS6, I can just go to "Properties on the website" and "Create / delete application status." However, I can’t understand for my whole life how to convert the website itself (and not the virtual directories under it) the application!

Ultimately, my problem is to use the publish function from Visual Studio 2010, as it gives me this error: It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level. This error can be caused by a virtual directory not being configured as an application in IIS.I assume that this is because the website is not configured as an application.

If I start creating a virtual directory under my website and promoting it into the application (by right-clicking on it and choosing Convert to Application), then everything will be all right. But I just can’t figure out how to do this on the website itself, and I need to do this because I need this MVC2 site hosted in www.domain.com/, and not www.domain.com/appname/. Am I really doing all this wrong? Am I using VS2010 incorrectly or am I missing an option in IIS?

I solved my problem. It turns out that the problem has nothing to do with IIS and its configuration, or something like that, but instead is a bipart of how VS2010 publishes web applications.
