Capturing a webcam in a web application

I need to take a webcam snapshot in webapp (PHP5 / JQuery / HTML5), but I cannot use Flash; Is there a lightweight Java applet or any alternative technology for this?

The answer you're looking for is the “HTML5 device API,” which so far does not support any of the existing browsers, stable or beta.

Another thing you need to write your own application or NPAPI plugin.
