Automatic translation of images into a 3d model

I really like the automatic translation of images to 3D models. Not for a commercial product, but in terms of possible academic research and implementation.

What I would like to achieve is almost transparent for the user process from a series of image transformations (smaller is better) to a 3d model that can be displayed in flash / silverlight / javafx or similar.

Consider an online furniture store with 3d models of all items in stock. Kinda cool to be able to see the product in 3d before buying.

I managed to find several programs, such as insight3d, but it cannot be used in my case, I think.

So do I have similar projects or tips? If you need to write this piece of software - I would really love to delve into research in this area.

As mentioned by David, this is a very difficult problem. For use, for example, in an online furniture store, you are much better off asking 3D models from the manufacturer. However, you can find some results right away on Google looking for things like “3D reconstruction” (but you also get tomography results) or “model generation from images”. Here are some examples:
