What launches the “new” when a document is published in the document library

Whenever I upload a document to the document library, it says new. What is the time frame for the "novelty" of this document. Also, is it possible to control this timeframe?

Basically, I had to change these settings for my clients using stsadm.exe. If you run:

stsadm -o getproperty -pn days-to-show-new-icon

This should tell you the current settings for the length of the day. To change the length of the day, try:

stsadm -o setproperty -pn days-to-show-new-icon -pv <number of days>
