Display Schedule / Calendar Shifts Using C #

I am very new and have SQL experience and a small amount of VBA. What I want to do is create a tool to pull the shift time from the database and display them in the schedule / calendar. It will be part of a desktop application that end users (very illiterate) will use to view and modify shift patterns. In fact, it will be a grid with days on one axis, and people on the other (I would like to have blocks proportional to the length of the shift). In my opinion, this could potentially be a simple Gantt chart.

All the computer materials that I found out went through a trial version and an error, and I want to use this project to better understand C #, as well as go to the final products. I read about ways to solve the problem, and my problem is to create a schedule frame with which I will associate the data. I am using Visual Studio 2010 and SQL Server 2008 R2.

Do you know about good resources that will either start me on the path to developing my own interface or provide a basic structure that I can adapt? All Ive resources found so far were in different languages or for web applications.

Thank you for your time.
