Websocket vs Ajax vs comet

I am going to use Ajax for the web panel w. real-time updates, planning for using Ajax, but I heard that web layout can be a good way.

Websocket or Ajax?

(comet and jetty are also optional)

I recommend using AJAX as it will be compatible with the widest range of browsers.

Web search angles sound promising, but are currently only supported on Chrome and Firefox 3.7+ according to Wikipedia .
