After publishing from visual studio, how can I change the settings of published applications? Can you edit the .deploy file?

Are you trying to change the publishing settings or files included in the deployment? Although the files look like plain XML, they are digitally signed and should not be modified in a regular editor.

You can use the MageUI tool to change the deployment manifest and application. You can access this from the Visual Studio command line or in one of the following places:

VS2010: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDK\Windows\v7.0A\bin
VS2008: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDK\Windows\v6.0A\bin
