Filtering Android ListActivity ArrayAdapter without a physical keyboard?

Question

I have a ListActivity based on ArrayAdapter with setTextFilterEnabled set to true. This works great on a device with a physical keyboard. When I start typing something on the keyboard, the elements are filtered.

My question is: how to get the same behavior on a device without a physical keyboard?

The user must press the MENU button for a long time to call up the soft keyboard. Then AFAIK, filtering works as usual.
