How do I get started on a larger project?

Question

In most cases, I programmed small applications for myself or for training. Now that my programming skills are considered somewhat intermediate, I was wondering how I would be involved in a major programming project.

Suppose I wanted to create an application with many features and is intended to be used by others, not just myself; How do I plan such projects?

Am I just jumping in and starting to code a thing or is there some recommended process?
