How to create a PowerPoint timer?

I need to fill a timer in PowerPoint, it counts a certain time when I click on a particular slide. I heard that macros can be a way to do this, but I know very little about them. With my research, I was able to add a macro and pop out of the message box when I click on a shape.

How can I implement a timer with this? VBA syntax is unfamiliar to me. However, what happens after the timer ends is another question.

Ok, this is a late answer, but for people faced with such a task, I dealt with this using custom animations in PowerPoint instead of doing it with macros. There are many things you can do with animation, so you are probably better off searching the Internet for exactly what you want to do.
