How to save MS Word (dotx) template file as docx when opening a document in Internet Explorer

I support a web application that allows you to open Word template documents inside a browser.

Recently, the client upgraded to Windows 7 and MS Word 2007, and my problems started ... When the template document is opened inside the browser and saved, the original file is overwritten instead of the newly created word file.

Is there a way to make the ms-word inside the browser behave the same as when launched outside the browser?
