Jquery document height incorrectly specified by IE (in XP) for the first time

I have a "first time" problem with IE that reports a different value for $ (document) .height (); when the page first loads compared to subsequent requests. The difference is 17 pixels, regardless of the size of the window opening - according to the finished document, the height is indicated by 17 pixels more than indicated in the following. I wonder if this is an artifact of any aspect of my page (some fields or paddings somewhere), but so far it cannot account for 17 pixels.

With page view: perhaps after the "document is ready", something happens, like other manipulations with the DOM, or just loading images, the size of which requires a re-stream.
