What is the difference between a "service" and a "server"?

I can imagine that a “server” can be a machine / host, but it can also be a program like ftp server, smtp server, etc. On the other hand, a “service” refers mainly to applications / programs.

Why then, for example, the Sql server cannot be called the Sql service? It has the same semantics. Or vice versa: MS Azure service: why is it not called Azure Server? :)

I would say:

  • Expected that
  • A serverwill give an answer
  • A servicenot

In addition, it servicemay contain more than server- it may be the environment, hardware, SLA, etc.

Or, if you prefer: you can come up with a definition, and someone will come up with a counter example.
