Tor api in your own project

Question

I am going to develop a gui based application for tone control (e.g. vidalia or torK). Are there libraries for using tor? I do not want to parse every byte of information from sockets. My program should display computer branches, use selected ones as a traffic provider, etc. What do I need in my case? Are there small and simple samples (e.g. open source projects) for this.
