Apache mod_rewrite rule in httpd.conf to change some paths, but not others

I have a rather difficult task to create an appropriate rewrite rule for Apache / 2.2.14 on Fedora 10. I work through the CodeIgniter-Doctrine tutorial , which uses the .htaccess file. (The search for removing index.php from CodeIgniter is about 10%.) But since it is not recommended for a production server, I am trying to configure it to work in /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf.

It seems that the .htaccess manual correctly tests existing files and then does not change the URL in such cases, but the rewrite log indicates that the conditions are correct (i.e. the file does not exist), although it is there.

Uncomment only the RewriteRule for style.css, since your RewriteCond is wrong (it should be RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^/css/style.css$) and redundant anyway.
