What should I use as a development platform, iPod or iPad?

I recently entered the world of contract programming, and two of my clients indicated that they would like to do something β€œtrendy,” for example, ipod touch / iphone / ipad. I have a Mac laptop (the first gen macbook pro) that I will have to upgrade to a snow leopard to do development for any of them, from what I read , So that it is a little committed, considering everything that I have on this laptop I have to make sure that it can be restored from the backup.

My budget is limited, but I think I need to learn this skill. On which device should I learn this development, iPod touch or iPad? I do not have money on the iPhone.

I think that the iPhone / iPad SDK has an emulator mode, but I like to have a device that I'm going to launch to make sure that everything works as I expected, that is, what is easy to read on a laptop screen is still readable on the touch screen, etc.

Right now, there are over hundreds of thousands of applications for the iPhone and iPod Touch, so I suggest developing for the iPad. There are far fewer applications to distinguish themselves from.
