How to enter the salesforce.com test environment?

I took the Rails app and am trying to set up Salesforce.com API credentials for my user account.

I am installed as a system administrator with "developer mode" (although I have no idea what this does, I just saw that it was installed in the previous account.)

We have a sandbox. I click on the login link, enter your sandbox username ( email@domain.com.sandbox ), enter my password and get "Login failed."

I know that my password is OK, as I visited the site several times. Using different domains (test.salesforce.com, etc.) also does not help.

Edit to clarify where I am stuck:

I registered on the production site and in the section "My sandboxes" there is a link to enter next to each sandbox, which takes you to the correct server and pre-populates the username of your sandbox.

So my problems are that you are logged in to the sandbox web interface.

I understand security tokens and create my own material for building applications, but I would prefer to try my sandbox changes first! From the examples I saw, the sandbox security tokens are different, so I'm trying to access the web interface for the sandbox.

My user account was created after the sandbox. So it was not in the sandbox.
