Is it possible to have transparent rendering of images in Photoshop?

Is it possible to have transparent rendering of images in Photoshop? I tried to save both jpg and gif with the selected transparency, but when I overlay it in css, it displays the background color behind it, and not the image that is under it. I played with z-index and it did not help.

JPEG images do not support transparency.
You need to save the image as a PNG file that supports transparency.

If you need IE6 support, you also need to use filterproeprty .

First of all, make sure your image has a transparent background in Photoshop - often a white and gray checkerboard. Then select “Save for Internet” (or something close to it, it varies in different versions) from the “File” menu, select everything that was done in GIF, and make sure “Transparency” is checked.
