What is LDAP and when do you consider using it in web applications?

What is LDAP and why do people use LDAP instead of rel. Db? I read some about LDAP on Wikipedia, but I'm still confused about what it is.

As you already know, LDAP is a specific database (plus a protocol for accessing it) for "directory services", mainly oriented to reading, only hierarchical, distributed scripts. It is mainly used for authentication, authorization, search / listing of users with their roles and data (and / or other objects) of some organizations.
