How significant are JPA performance benefits for lazy loading?

I understand that this is very specific for a particular application, but I'm just wondering what is the general opinion or, at least, personal experience in this matter.

I have an aversion to the "open session in view" template, so to avoid this, I am thinking about simply getting everything you want with ease and using service level queries to get more material.

Has anyone used this and regretted it? And maybe some elegant solution for lazy loading in a presentation layer that I don't know about?
