I am working for the first time in the MS Dyanmics CRM 4.0 project. Our company has a large number of remote employees and even more remote consultants. Thus, it will be necessary to make the CRM solution available over the Internet. As far as I can tell, I have three options:
- Ask everyone to use a VPN to access the intranet site (typical on-site deployment). However, we found that VPN solutions are far from problems and cause many support problems. We avoid them like the plague.
- Use IFD to open CRM on the Internet. I know little about this, except that the URL will be different from the URL in place, which can cause some headaches (see below).
- Open a CRM site by opening a site on the Internet using SSL to encrypt traffic. We are currently doing this on our sharepoint MS sites. I am not sure how safe this is (one of the reasons for this question).
I would like to avoid using both internal intranet deployment and IFD together for several reasons. One solution request is to use e-mail to notify users that they are assigned a task, and to include the URL in the task in the email. For this reason. If both deployments are used, then I will need to specify two URLs and the user will need to know what to use. This leads to a second reason: the main users of the solution divide the time between being in the office and being removed. Thus, they will need to access the solution in two different ways and know when to use it. Poorly.
So what are the advantages / disadvantages of any of these methods? Any other options? Is there a problem using IFD from within the intranet? Safety problems?
