I have seen more and more websites using fancy anti-aliased fonts. Every time I hit one, I think to myself: "Hmm, what is a font safe on the Internet?" - but after looking at CSS, I usually find some font name in quotation marks, for example "Palatino Linotype". Obviously, it is not safe on the Internet, but according to a Wikipedia article , "Palatino Linotype ships with Windows 2000 or later and Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003." So, what covers 95% of users who can visit your site? And thanks to the power of CSS, a website can return to a similar generic font type name, such as “serif” for non-Windows users with this line:
font: 16px/20px "Palatino Linotype", serif;
Awesome! I want to start using fancy fonts!
Is there a list of lists that were pre-installed in Windows 98, 2000, NT, ME, XP, 2003, etc. and maybe for versions of Mac OSX and various Linux distributions? This will be a great link for choosing web font fonts!
(if not, someone should compile it!)
I had never heard of Palatino Linotype before, and I want to know what other fonts existed from older versions of Windows that I never knew about!
