Is there any software for creating a type of open source user guide?

Is there any open source user guide type software available? Or is it better to use wiki type systems? We want to be able to create user manuals on the fly through a web interface and are available online. Or is this best achieved with Wikis? Thanks

I use MediaWiki for the user guide and man page in my company and it works very well!

Create your own namespaces for different parts, and if you want access controls you can create different groups.

The extensions are great because you can always find something you want (i.e. print in PDF for an offline copy)

I would highly recommend using Wikis. As long as your chosen markup covers your needs, it is ideal for user guides.

This post is not 100% on the topic - it's about creating a user guide for the workplace (as opposed to software) - but many ideas still deserve attention.

This is a good guide to using the Wiki in knowledge sharing.

We used Wikispaces.com to create guides and guides for several projects. Especially if you are a non-profit organization with an educational mission K-12, then the current setup for Wikispace includes private projects so that you can develop documentation and publish it when it suits.
