ASP.Net. What is the current best practice for tracking state and session variables?

We are creating a new ASP.Net web application for users / the public. There are two problems:

- Use cookie or cookieless checking?

. If we decide not to use cookies at all, how would you store data that would otherwise be stored in a cookie (customer ID, affiliate ID, etc.). Is ASP.Net authentication infrastructure similar to CustomerID?
