How common is Eshell Emacs in cross-platform development?

I only recently found out about the Emacs eshell utility. It looks powerful enough as it is completely written in Emacs Lisp and does not require support for native hooks. Emacs informational documentation is a bit rare, but EmacsWiki has pretty decent information, at least at first glance.

Given the potential value of eshell as a scripting / programmer tool that works equally well across multiple platforms, I wonder how widespread the use of eshell is compared to the usual shell (bash) among software developers. Will those of you who took the time to study it recommend this or is it one of those many interesting ideas that really didn't stand out?
