How to distinguish new items from existing items in a SharePoint workflow

I have an SPD workflow that starts when an element changes, but it continues to fire on new elements, which is pretty annoying. I am studying why this is happening, but I am also looking for a way to terminate the workflow if the item is new as a temporary workaround.

I tried to compare the "Create" field to the "Modified" field, i.e. if the "Created and Modified" are the same, then do not run. This did not work as a date or string comparison.

Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.
