.htaccess twitter or facebook url naming convention

For my social networking site, I would like to create a facebook or twitter with a similar URL naming convention.

Using Twitter as an example, they have pages labeled twitter.com/about and another page labeled twitter.com/{$ username}

However, how do you distinguish between a user who is now registering on our site as "o." From this, we are going to have a server conflict between the "about" user and the page.

What is the best way to handle this?
