From developer to web developer to web designer

Question

Is it possible for a fairly experienced Java developer to switch to a web developer and then to a web designer. I suppose I ask: suppose you have a (Java) developer above the average level - is it possible for this developer to acquire web development skills that will allow him / her to develop small business sites without the need to hire external skills.
If so, where does the path to creating a web developer / designer begin? Do you need skills? Used tools?

Most of the web designers I met have no development experience at all. They have a combination of aesthetic talent and an understanding of the HCI side / usability of website design.

They have some knowledge of what is possible on the development side or what the costs will be, but they usually do not do it themselves. Many studios have both designers and developers.

I personally believe that programming skills and design skills are not something that can be acquired, you need to have a tendency and natural talent for everyone. One can learn, but this would not be as effective as the "natural." Unfortunately, I admit that I do not have aesthetic talent for a good website design. Damn it, my wife objected that I didn’t have the aesthetic talent to dress beautifully :) But if you have it, why not?

This is certainly possible, but do not overestimate yourself, Web Designer is a completely different profession than a developer. I doubt that you can be a specialist in everything, and hiring a designer allows you to concentrate and be experienced in your set of skills and give you the opportunity to grow your business (which, in turn, will pay outsourcing to the designer).
