How to register a server side link to HTMLGenericControl?

Question

I am looking for a reliable mechanism to create a server-side reverse handler for an HTMLGenericControl, such as the li element.

I have a markup that I don’t want to change, and would prefer to treat it the same way as a standard .Net server.

In addition, I know that I can use a template-based control to put some .Net elements in the markup as hidden, and then trigger their click events from the client-side click proxy. However, I am really asking if this can be done better.
