ASP.net Machine Configuration File

Question

If I set configuration options (e.g. membership provider) DB Connnection etc. in "machine.config" and delete the file "web.config" from my current application, will my application work without problems? Is this a common practice in .NET?

You can do this, but you need to be careful that all applications hosted on the server match or override the behavior.
