Suggestions for the mashup app

I need to write a mashup application for a university course, and I need to use some APIs, but I need to choose what to use and what the last application should do. Unfortunately, I never made such an application, so I’m not sure what to do ... I don’t want to code a stupid application that uses Google Maps APIs, as the Internet seems to be full of such things. Do you have any suggestion for me? Is there any mashup web application you want that doesn't exist yet? I can use JAVA, GWT (and the Google engine of course) or python, but I also accept offers for other languages. Thank you in advance!

While there is nothing wrong with yet another geo application, you are right that there are too many.

How do you feel about social networking and real-time search? Could you get interesting things from Twitter, Facebook, and the rest - combine them with another data source.

Mixing with stock tickers from Yahoo! Finances would certainly be an interesting portfolio for interviews in the financial industry.

YQL has access to several APIs. Perhaps this will simplify:

Last.FM, Google News Feeds, Twitter Google Chart, , , . / , , .

If you can, you can add some text analysis to find out if people are speaking, positive or negative. 750words.com has some interesting metrics on it, but I have no idea how it really was.

How about a single photo album? You can receive images from different sites (facebook, picasa, flicker ...) and create a combined album for each user.
