Are there any good resources / idioms for visual designing business applications?

I think we all know what “software for your company” looks like.

Are there any resources, rules of advice, or general tricks to visually tame such applications? Our business is quite complex, like most, and our customers require great flexibility. Tracking the many fields on each object is definitely not avoided.

In addition to general tips, I am also interested in using tools and tools specific to WinForms. If there are any examples of (visually) well-designed software of this type, this will also help.
