Athena General Assembly [1] is a very good cover around the PDE assembly mechanism. Therefore, if you want to use PDEBuild, then you can use Athena to help remove most of the "pain" that is associated with using PDEBuild. I personally used the Athena general assembly to create my eclipse plugins and individual features on the update site. You can see my releng project, which contains the general Athena build here [2].
