Drop-down list on the Internet with a large list of entries

The number of entries displayed in drop-down lists affects the performance of Internet applications. What are the current best practices for solving this problem? Have drop-outs been highlighted as the only solution? What is considered a large list? > 100 or> 1000?

You may have a text box where people can enter text and you get an AJAX response to the server to find the best matches. Similar to how Google searches make offers.

You can use javascript and execute httprequest to extract the data to the mirror page and manually install the xml data in your combobox. Text data loads faster than direct binding on the server.
