Do I need to automatically log in after activating an account?

This is the standard scenario:

  • User is registered on the site
  • The user receives an account activation email, clicks on the activation link
  • The website notifies the user that this account has been activated.

Now there are at least two ways:

  • The user logs on to the login screen and asks to enter login information
  • The user is automatically registered and sent to the welcome page / profile / etc

Despite the obvious advantages in (2), as far as users are concerned, there may be disadvantages. Option (1) offers improved protection at the price of UX.

Which scenario is preferable and why? Any serious flaws in any of them?

If your user does not enter confidential data during the registration process, registering them in no time will make your application more convenient. Also keep in mind that if your application offers functionality to recover user accounts that have lost their passwords by sending an email with a reactivation / password (and I'm sure that it is), you already assume that the user can save their e - different from snooky people, so why not enter them after activation?
