Intentions? How to register to receive notifications about incoming messages?

The extreme newbie to the Android developer is here ... well, the newbie to Android development, not development as a whole.

I want to write an application that receives a notification when emails arrive on the device, and takes various actions based on the data in the email (subject, sender, etc.). I think I need to create a BroadcastReceiver with an IntentFilter. The problem I am facing is figuring out what intentions I need to “listen”. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thank.
