Querying a transport database through web services without using a dataset

Understanding that transferring datasets through web services is a bit difficult (and almost not completely priceless for non-.NET clients), what is the best way to get database query results that are not comparable to known types for transporting through web services in WITH#?

Get your results back as collections of data transfer objects. These would be simple objects containing only properties. There will be one property for each column of your result.
