Problem: You have some data, and your program needs the specified input. For example, strings that are numbers. You are looking for a way to convert the source data in the format you need. And the problem is that the source can be anything. It can be XML, property lists, binary, which contains the necessary data, deeply embedded in binary garbage. And your output format may also be different: it can be numeric strings, float, double ...
You do not want to program. You need routines that give you commands that can convert data to the desired form. Of course, it contains regular expressions, but it is very well designed and offers features that are sometimes much simpler and more efficient.
Addition:
Many users have this problem and hope that their programs can convert, read and write data that is provided by other sources. If this is not possible, they are doomed or use programs such as business intelligence. It's not a problem. I am talking about a tool for a developer who knows what he is doing, but who is also not happy to write routines in a regular language each time. A professional data manipulation tool, something like a hex editor, regular expression, vi, grep, a parser melted together, accessible by procedure or REPL.
If you have a data format specification, you can immediately receive and convert data. No need to debug or plan carefully how to program the conversion. I am looking for a solution because I do not believe that the problem is new.
