Uninstall another MSI during installation

I have a basic MSI project. I need to uninstall another MSI product during installation, which is now integrated into our main application. I tried using upgrade scripts and treating it as a major upgrade. However, this did not work due to the fact that the update codes do not match, I believe.

Then I also did a special action that ran msiexec.exe after CostFinalize (I think it was listed in the Installshield help.) This worked fine until I installed a system that didn't have the installer I was looking to uninstall. My installer will fail if another legacy product is not installed. I tried to set the condition for user actions set by system search, but it seems that system search is limited by functionality. I can’t just check the registry key and set the boolean property.

Any ideas?
