Can load balancers be modeled and to what extent do they provide performance gains?

Question

I have a website that runs on IIS (Asp.net application, some of which are also in dotnetnuke), and we expect more traffic on some sites, so we plan to add a load balancer, but before we do that, we just want to know if it's worth it? So, I want to know if it is possible to simulate a load balancer and how much benefit do they provide?
