How to protect passwords in an Android application

Many of my users have requested password protection for various data items in my database. Unfortunately, one of my existing functions is to back up the database to a public location (SD card) for data redundancy, so my database is not safe.

So my question is twofold.

  • How can I encrypt or protect the database on android?

  • How to store user passwords created on the device in a safe, inaccessible way.
